Tinnitus and Ringing in the Ears
Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, is a subjective sensation described by the patient according to its tone in different ways: bells, buzzing, the sound of the sea or shells, etc. Often, the patient describes pulsating tinnitus, synchronous with the heart rate.
It can be permanent or appear in certain situations, such as when lying down, after physical exertion, due to changes in atmospheric pressure, etc. Regarding their location, they are referred to the ears, either lateralized or diffuse throughout the cranial area.
Regardless of its manifestation, tinnitus is a social dysfunction that impedes the sufferer’s normal activity, causing mood swings, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and insomnia.
As long as the sensory cells of the hearing and balance organs are intact, there is a good chance of improvement and even the disappearance of symptoms. Otherwise, the progression of symptoms may only be delayed.
The sooner tinnitus is treated, the greater the chances of success. The causes of tinnitus are very varied.
Apart from structural dysfunctions, stress appears to play an important role. Psychic tension can trigger tinnitus through muscular attachments to the temporal bone.
An important cause is related to the condition of the auditory canals. This tone is likely produced by blood flow in the internal carotid artery at its bend in the petrous portion of the temporal bone. It is separated from the inner ear only by a thin layer of bone, so structural alterations in this area can lead to tinnitus.
The vestibular nerve of the vestibulocochlear nerve can also be affected by tension in the dura mater in the internal acoustic meatus, causing hearing disorders. The techniques of choice are temporal bone techniques, including treatment of the temporomandibular joint, separation of the sutural junctions of the temporal bone, work with the pterygoid muscle, gentle decompression and untwisting of the neck, and work on the jaws.
On an energetic or emotional level, tinnitus can be related to “I don’t want to hear it anymore,” and stress seems to play a significant role in some cases.
