Neck and Shoulder Pain: Causes, Consequences, and How to Treat Them with Craniosacral Therapy

Neck and shoulder pain are increasingly common in today’s society. The shoulder joint complex is one of the most sophisticated structures in the human body, designed to offer great mobility. However, this same complexity makes it highly vulnerable to overuse, inactivity, and poor posture.

Why do shoulders and necks hurt?

One of the main causes of pain in this area is the biomechanical complexity of the shoulder. Different types of soft tissues (muscles, tendons, fascia, and ligaments) surround this joint, which serves as an essential bridge between the trunk and the hand. When there is dysfunction in this area, symptoms can spread to the neck and arms.

In my practice in Barcelona, specializing in craniosacral therapy and somatoemotional release, it is common to find people suffering from neck and shoulder pain. This can be due to excessive physical activity (as occurs in some gyms, where exercises are performed that are not suitable for body conditioning), or the other side of the coin: a sedentary lifestyle, prolonged postures in front of a computer or television, and a lack of conscious movement.

Connection between the Neck and Shoulders

The cervical region and the shoulder are closely related. Myofascial restrictions in the neck can cause pain radiating to the arms, and vice versa. Therefore, it is essential to address this area holistically.

Treatment with Craniosacral Therapy and Myofascial Release

In our practice, we apply a specific protocol that combines:

  • Joint Unblocking
  • Myofascial Release
  • Craniosacral Therapy Techniques
  • Emotional Release Work

This approach helps restore balance to the body, improve shoulder mobility, and relieve accumulated tension in the cervical region.
