Back Pain, the Pelvis and Craniosacral Osteopathy

“The design of our spine is one of the most fascinating mysteries of biology. The structure of these 33 vertebrae, together with the discs of fiber and cartilage that unite them and the ligaments that hold them, allow for exceptional resistance and flexibility. But in the same way, it represents our Achilles heel, our strongest point.”

We could call the different back pains the disease of modern society or sedentary society.

We recently have two very significant data:

=

80% of the Western population suffers from back pain

=

Lower back pain is the leading cause of disability

In the world, above cardiovascular diseases.
The lumbosacral area is especially vulnerable to compressive forces and stress: very common falls in childhood, accidents, childbirth, neuromuscular problems, overuse of the body in sports or work, postural causes, the sedentary life of modern life and even emotional problems…

“A recent study in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases (a specialized publication of the British Medical Journal) indicates that low back pain, inflammation of the area surrounding the lumbar vertebrae, is the most disabling disease of all, that is, the one that causes the most and longest-lasting work absences.”

In Craniosacral Therapy from a very gentle touch, we use different techniques to unblock the lumbar area and hips, such as L5-S1 decompression, the fascial technique of the transverse planes of the pelvic diaphragm and sacroiliac decompression, which will help to regain the balance of the pelvis.

Anada Rolf, creator of Rofing, calls the hip “the joint that determines symmetry”, because in a straight and upright human being, the small differences between the two hips usually branch downwards, towards the legs, or upwards, towards the trunk.

Helping the body regain its balance is a very important goal for Craniosacral and Rebalancing.

A very important role that I discuss in another article is the work of the fascia, the great forgotten in many techniques of classical physiotherapy.

The human body has a functional unity: all systems are interdependent and are related to each other. These unions are made first by the fascia (in the singular), that is, the set of connective tissue structures that surround, support and form all the structures of the body, such as the bone, the skeletal muscle system, the organs, the viscera, the nervous and circulatory systems.

All the different fascial structures of the body originate from the same embryonic layer and all connect to each other, therefore guaranteeing the unity of the body. The term fascia refers to any type of connective tissue membrane whose main function is the support, maintenance and cohesion of organs, viscera, muscles, blood vessels, bones, and the nervous system.

Fascia derives from the embryonic leaf of the mesoderm, which is the origin of all tissues in the body, except for the skin and mucous membranes. Present at all levels of the body, it not only surrounds each structure, muscle, organ, nerve, vessel, etc., but also insinuates itself inside each of them to form its matrix and support. Therefore, it is the envelope that erects and models the anatomical form, present everywhere; it is interrupted only at the cell, which is immersed in its fundamental substance.

Fascia is a superficial envelope of the entire body, which divides numerous times until it becomes deeper and deeper.

In Craniosacral Osteopathy and Rebalancing, fundamental importance is given to fascial work because it directly influences spinal pain and with this we work on the underlying causes of this pain.
